The Indian River Lagoon National Estuary Program has partnered with the Snook Foundation to sponsor a Snook Watch event on the evening of Thursday, August 12.  Brett Fitzgerald, author of Sportsman's Best: Snook, will talk about catching snook as well as participating in the Angler Action Program.  The event will give Brevard’s anglers a chance to learn how to collect and report their catch data to help conserve fisheries and habitat in the Indian River Lagoon.  The collected data from anglers is used to evaluate stocks of fish using an on-the-water data collection form and an online logbook, making it easy for anglers to record timely catch data in the Angler Action Program.

Data collected by anglers will contribute to sound, science-based fishery management and will be used by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute to supplement directed fishery research.

Brett Fitzgerald  will explain how the collected data will help the lagoon fisheries that took a big hit during the January cold kill.  The Angler Action Program’s online logbook closely tracks the information FWC biologists ask in face-to-face surveys and will give fishery managers information about catch per unit of effort, about length distribution and hopefully about the habitat post-juvenile fish are using.   “Participating anglers may leave off information about the location of their favorite fishing holes and still submit a valid angler’s report”, says Fitzgerald.

Please share this event announcement with your fishing club members, friends and family.
