Trey Wheeler - Sailfish Flats in Stuart, FL
Started the day out wanting to look for Cobia, but it was too sporty out of the inlet so settled for parking the boat to do some wading. Got out on the sailfish flats with a dark overcast which kept us from being able to sight fish. Got half way up towards a spoil island when I see a fish pushing water that looked far too big to be a mullet. Fish was cruising along in about a foot and a half of water nice and easily. Took a nice long cast with a DOA cal paddle tail in the Glow/gold rush color about 15ft in front of it. I let the fish get a little bit closer than I popped it up out of the grass, and the bite was almost instantaneous. Fish made a blazing run towards the mangroves which were about 50 yds away. I coudln't turn the fish with my shimano saros 2500 on a crowder 7ft 6-12lb rod. I let it take the run which it made right to the edge of the mangroves and it had tired itself out. I pumped this fish back towards me to find I did not have a redfish it was a 38inch snook. I was very excited to see this fish, and after two quick pictures I had to take my time and revive the fish as it was exhausted from the fight. My buddy caught a couple small trout and snook while I took my time with this big girl. After a little while the snook was getting lively. I gave her a push and she cruised behind us where we had already walked as if a courtesy not to disturb any more fish that would have been ahead of it. Appreciated everything that snook did that day, and hope to catch her again sometime in the near future.

Mitchell Roffer - South of Longpoint Campground
Went kayak fishing with Carol (angler) on the flats just south of the Longpoint campground. We saw a big school of mullet swimming and we fished them like crazy, but no action other than one 16 inch trout. We set up on a corner point and the snook hit a shrimp on a bobber and put on a great fight. Ran the bases forward and backward, out to center field and almost went into the mangrove roots, but did not. Fish was photographed, measured and released alive and swam away with vigor.

I had to swim under the dock after the big snook tangled up and swam back out. Don’t know how the line held (20 lb flouro leader). After swimming under the the dock I had all the line tangled up underneath the spool. I chased him by foot to keep the line from popping as the fish ran. Just as I couldn’t walk any deeper, I got the tangle out. I got in the boat behind the wheel and pulled the fish away with the boat. Kept her in the water so we never measured, but we guess this one around 37"

A big school of mullet came through and distracted the fish's attention away from the smaller pilchards.
