“There is nothing quite like the spectacle of a trophy snook exploding under a wad of hapless baitfish. The carnage is immediate, efficient, and over in a flash. Hook this master of ambush and the fight that follows is likely to include some combination of rodeo-style head shakes; surface-clearing leaps; somersaults; fast, powerful runs; and a dogged determination to get to the nearest structure. In open water, some say the snook is an ordinary fighter. However, in much of this fish’s range, line-parting structure such as mangrove roots, oysters and pilings loom. And snook seem to know that freedom is just a short burst away…
…Your idea of snooking may be duping a wary fish with a fly in a foot of water under a sun-drenched sky. Or, wrestling a 40-pound monster away from a bridge piling at midnight. You may specialize, or you may mix it up. There is no right or wrong way to fish for this aggressive predator…”
