Frank Sargeant's Forward

“…It’s all here and it’s all accurate and thoroughly explained. Most will find the information on the biology of the fish and how the species fits seamlessly into the ecosystems to be both instructive and fascinating. And understanding a bit of the science of the snook will surely make anyone a better snook fisherman.

Understanding tides is central to your success, and for most of us it takes years until we begin to grasp the complexities even of our home bay, never mind strange waters to which we travel to wet a line. This book is worth reading for that chapter, alone. It explains clearly how the moon, the sun, the wind and even the shape of the bottom in the estuaries affect the rise and fall of the water, and consequently the movements and feeding of snook. And the author is generous with his observations on exactly where the fish are likely to be on various phases of the tide, in habitat varying from blackwater mangrove country to oyster bars and grassflat potholes to inlets and beaches of both Florida coasts…”

In his introduction, Fitzgerald sets the tone:

“The mullet passes through the valley of the shadow of death…and that death is snook.

And the mullet better be afraid.”

The breadth of the snook fishery, and the content of his book, are summed up as follows:

“There is nothing quite like the spectacle of a trophy snook exploding under a wad of hapless baitfish. The carnage is immediate, efficient, and over in a flash. Hook this master of ambush and the fight that follows is likely to include some combination of rodeo-style head shakes; surface-clearing leaps; somersaults; fast, powerful runs; and a dogged determination to get to the nearest structure. In open water, some say the snook is an ordinary fighter. However, in much of this fish’s range, line-parting structure such as mangrove roots, oysters and pilings loom. And snook seem to know that freedom is just a short burst away…

…Your idea of snooking may be duping a wary fish with a fly in a foot of water under a sun-drenched sky. Or, wrestling a 40-pound monster away from a bridge piling at midnight. You may specialize, or you may mix it up. There is no right or wrong way to fish for this aggressive predator…”

…But there is always a best way.
